Capilano music student Alvin Brendan named rising jazz star

When the Fort Langley Jazz & Arts Festival returns as a virtual festival this September, Richmond-based jazz guitar player, Alvin Brendan will be featured as the event’s rising star jazz award winner.

Brendan, a 22-year-old fourth year music student at Capilano University, earned a $1,000 scholarship and performance slots at the festival with his band and as a soloist at the jazz education faculty concert.

Organizers are asking for public opinion on what people would like to see in September

This year’s in-person edition of the Fort Langley Jazz and Arts Festival has been postponed to July 23 – 25, 2021 in light of the global pandemic and restrictions for large public gatherings.

In the meantime, festival organizers are exploring the possibilities and opportunities of a virtual festival running online and are seeking public input.

Fort Langley Jazz and Art’s Festival moves to September

Fort Langley Jazz and Arts Festival is moving to September long weekend.

Originally scheduled to take place in July, festival organizers have decided to move the event to the Sept. 4 to 6 weekend “given the unprecedented time.”

“Bringing the community together to enjoy music and art is what we do, but with the COVID-19 outbreak, we need to take precautions,” said Karen Zukas, a festival executive director.

Jazz vocalist Jennifer Scott comes to town with her trio

Jennifer Scott is bringing her jazz trio to Saba Café on Nov. 30, performing as this month’s featured guest with Jazz in the Fort’s concert series.

Dave Quinn, artistic director for the Fort Langley Jazz & Arts Festival, said Scott is one of the most important jazz artists working in Canada and the U.S. today.
