What It Really Takes to Keep the Festival Free and Accessible
There’s a moment that happens every year at the Fort Langley Jazz & Arts Festival.
Someone arrives for the first time, unsure of what to expect. They wander through the Village, hear music around the corner and stop. What begins as a visit to the Festival’s free programming turns into an afternoon of discovery, connection and joy. That experience is what the Festival is all about, and it’s made possible by something many people don’t realize: the effort and support required to keep it free.
The Festival is built on two concepts: provide free and accessible programming and deliver world-class experiences. That’s also what makes it complex.
The Festival is actually a hybrid event featuring two full days of free music, art and culture along with select headliner performances and evening shows that are ticketed. This balance helps support the overall Festival while ensuring there are still accessible entry points for the entire community.
A Festival That Belongs to Everyone
“Keeping the Festival free isn’t just a financial decision, it’s a reflection of what the festival stands for,” says the Festival’s Executive Director and Co-Founder, Karen Zukas. From the beginning, the goal has been to create a space where everyone can participate.
Removing the price barrier ensures that everyone—families, seniors, youth and those who may not otherwise have access to live performances—can take part. This approach transforms the Festival into something more than an event. It becomes a shared experience grounded in community.
Accessibility also drives discovery. When people can attend freely, they’re more likely to experience new artists, genres and cultural expressions they might not have otherwise. That openness helps grow audiences, support artists and foster a deeper appreciation for the arts.

The Reality Behind the Scenes
What many people don’t see is the extensive work that goes on behind the scenes long before the Festival begins. “Producing a high-quality Festival is a true year-round effort, something many people are surprised to learn,” Karen explains.
Planning starts as soon as one Festival ends. Months are spent securing funding, coordinating logistics, booking artists and preparing every detail needed to deliver an unforgettable experience. From permits and site design to production and programming, every element is carefully considered.

Where Donations Make a Difference
Because the Festival features two days of free music, art and culture, donations are essential. “When someone makes a donation, they’re helping bring the entire experience to life, much of which happens long before the first note is played,” Karen explains.
Donations support artists, ensuring they are fairly compensated and able to share their talent with the community. They fund production, including staging, sound and lighting, that allow performances to reach thousands of people in an outdoor setting. They also sustain operations, including permits and insurance, accessibility features, volunteer coordination and more.

Supporting the Next Generation
Donations also help invest in the future of the arts through initiatives like the Youth & Emerging Artist Stage, where contributions fund mentoring, stage setup and opportunities for emerging artists.
“The Youth Stage is one of the most meaningful expressions of the Festival’s mission because it’s about more than performance. It’s about opportunity, growth and the future of the arts,” says Dave Quinn, Artistic Director and Co-Founder of the Festival. “It creates a pipeline of new voices, fresh perspectives and future headliners.”
For many young artists, it is their first opportunity to perform on a professional stage. That experience can be transformative, opening doors to future possibilities. “It builds confidence, validates their talent and often sparks the belief that pursuing music or the arts is truly possible,” says Dave.
Preserving what Makes it Special
The Festival’s impact is rooted in moments of connection. “A family wandering in by chance, staying for hours, someone hearing live jazz for the very first time… those moments happen because there’s no barrier to entry,” Karen says. If that barrier were introduced, much of that magic could be lost. Keeping it free isn’t just about cost; it’s about preserving the Festival’s spirit and its unique impact on Fort Langley.
