 Jazz trumpet student wins first Fort Langley Jazz & Arts Festival Rising Young Star 

Fort Langley, BC--April 25, 2019--Jazz trumpet student, Julian Borkowski has been selected as the first Fort Langley Jazz & Arts Rising Young Star Award. The inaugural award recognizes an outstanding student from the lower mainland who demonstrates a high level of performance ability and will be pursuing a professional career in jazz music.

The Fort Langley Jazz & Arts Festival is pleased to offer a unique opportunity for one talented jazz student to become our Rising Young Star. The award will support the development of an emerging young jazz artist by providing an opportunity to perform with a main stage artist on Saturday, July 27, 2018 during the Fort Langley Jazz & Arts Festival, and in their own featured performance at the festival on Sunday, July 28, 2019. The award recipient will also receive a scholarship of $1,000.

Application Evaluation

The Rising Young Star Award recognizes an outstanding student who is or will be studying jazz music at the post-secondary level; who demonstrates a high level of performance ability and will be pursuing their goal of a professional career in jazz music.

Applicants will be scored on their applications according to the evaluation criteria below.

An eligible applicant must be:

  1. Planning on studying jazz music at the post-secondary level or is currently studying jazz music at the post-secondary level at the time of application

  2. A Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident, able to provide a Canadian social insurance number

  3. A permanent resident in British Columbia

Note: Assistance is not available for travel expenses, basic workshops, seminars, individual projects, or summer school programs or past studies or other retroactive use.

Applications are evaluated on the basis of:

  • Calibre of artistic work submitted, demonstrated ability and potential

  • Demonstrated commitment and achievements in jazz performance

  • Voluntarily involvement in passing music skills to others

  • Applicant’s goals in music and potential to become a professional practicing artist

  • Performance appraisal from music instructor

  • Quality of presentation, including all supporting documentation

Attach one good quality MP3, CD or YouTube recording via a YouTube or SoundCloud link. Recording should demonstrate outstanding musicality and a high level of performance. Improvisation is optional but highly recommended. The recording must start with the applicant’s name, introduction of instrument/voice and the title of the submission.
